As our beloved dogs age, their grooming needs change. With over 20 years of experience—and the last decade specializing in senior dogs and those with emotional sensitivities such as anxiety—we’ve learned that patience, intention, and customization make all the difference.

Here are our top tips for keeping grooming a safe and positive experience for senior pups.

Choose the Right Grooming Environment

The first and most important step is deciding where your senior dog will be groomed. Different settings can make a huge difference in both your dog’s comfort and safety.

Salon Setting

If you choose a salon, make sure your pup is in and out quickly and not placed in a kennel. Long waits in unfamiliar environments can increase stress, especially if the salon doubles as a daycare. The presence of rambunctious dogs—or worse, rough play or humping—can be overwhelming and even painful for seniors with joint sensitivity.

Mobile Grooming

Mobile grooming helps avoid many of these risks altogether. It ensures that dogs stay out of kennels, aren’t exposed to rowdy groups, and receive one-on-one care in a quiet, controlled setting. Within mobile grooming, there are two distinct options:

  • Van-Based Grooming: A fully equipped grooming van parked outside your home may be the best solution for dogs who find being inside the home or near their owner too stressful. It provides a contained, calm environment with all the professional tools we need.

  • In-Home Grooming: For others, we can set up inside your home in a small, well-lit space with adequate power. Owners can stay nearby—about three feet away—to observe, offer reassurance, or even step in if needed. In some cases, we’ve had owners assist during the groom for senior dogs with high fall risks.

In-Home Salon or Daycare Grooming

Another “halfway” option between mobile and salon grooming is bringing your dog to a trusted provider’s home. At Bubbles and Beyond, we sometimes welcome dogs into our own in-home salon and daycare environment, where the pace is slower and the care is highly individualized.

This option offers flexibility:

  • Some grooms are done straight through.

  • Others allow for breaks—dogs can potty outside, rest, or nap in between services. For example, we’ve groomed senior pups in two stages: a haircut in the morning, then a relaxing bath in the afternoon before pickup.

The key is low volume, intentional scheduling, and a strong focus on the dog’s best interest at all times.

Finding a company willing to adapt to your dog’s specific needs and your family’s preferences is key to having both a successful groom and an experience that feels thoughtful and cared for.

Respect Their Time and Stamina

Senior dogs often don’t have the same stamina as younger pets, and their bodies can’t always handle a long or rushed grooming session.

  • Assessment First: We begin by assessing what your dog can comfortably handle. Sometimes, that means adjusting the mindset from “the full spa day” to “what’s best for my dog right now.”

  • Gentle Pace: Grooming should move at a pace that respects the dog’s body. Allowing them to sit for parts of the process, standing only when necessary, helps minimize stress and joint strain.

  • Limited Range of Motion: We carefully handle limbs with restricted mobility—keeping movement gentle during nail trimming or paw shaving to avoid unnecessary discomfort.

Reframe What Grooming Means for Seniors

As dogs age, it’s important to redefine what “being fully groomed” looks like.

  • Break Services Into Parts: Sometimes, one long session is just too much. Instead, services can be separated. For example, we may trim the coat and nails for immediate comfort, then suggest a gentle bath at home a few days later.

  • Health Comes First: Pushing seniors through every stage of grooming in one sitting can increase their risk of falls, ligament injuries, or even serious health complications like stroke or heart attack due to stress. Splitting up services reduces these risks while still keeping your dog clean and comfortable.

  • Parental Support: We support families with guidance, equipment suggestions, and shampoo recommendations so they can confidently manage simple at-home care between visits.

Customize, Don’t Standardize

Every senior dog is unique, and their grooming should reflect that. Grooming shouldn’t feel like an assembly line where every dog gets the same treatment. Instead, it should be intentional, personalized, and mindful of each dog’s health, comfort, and emotional well-being.

At Bubbles and Beyond Pet Care, we offer elevated, intentional grooming tailored to each dog’s needs. Senior dogs hold a special place in our hearts, and we take pride in creating calm, safe, and supportive experiences for them and their families.
